Battery on a budget
Brew, shockingly bad luck, mate; for the sake of 35 bucks plus shipping, try the MotoBatteries unit. And I'm not the only one who's impressed!
In my field (marine), gels were favoured until AGMs became more affordable. I have one of my regular yachts with circa 2000Ah made up of 180Ah x 6V batteries in two banks. They tend to last 5 years, as a rule, and those banks, together, cost around €14k. I'm soon to convert them to Li-ion; one-third of the weight, but been receiving quotes around €40k! Unfortunately there's no AGM equivalent that will fit without fairly major reconstruction within the bowels of a 30m sailing yacht. Wax-man, MotoBatteries claim this model fits the Dream also. Scroll down their eBay description and compare the dimensions. G'luck, guys.
Doh! Sorry mate, I just clocked your pre '65 bit. And I should've read your post more thoroughly.
Try their eBay store? There're 143 different(?) types there. I sent a message to the seller as I didn't see 'em listed on the site. I'm certain that on the strength of my missive they'll be retooling this product in no time in order to satisfy a slim segment of vintage Honda owners that require an odd-shaped battery. Like my mom always said- can't hurt to ask.
What are all you early model Dreamers doing for batteries? Do we ALL have the same NOS wet cell (blue and red) with the vent tube that I found on eBay (and nowhere else)? '63 CA77 - Giving me all kinds of headaches.
'64 CA77 - Patiently waiting it's turn '65 CB77 - A 'great winter project'
OK, thanks everyone. I am sure the new technology has something to offer, but I went with a good old lead-acid battery, with plugs that I can actually remove to top off the electrolite with water when needed.
My local Honda dealer in Glendale, CA had it in stock! Yes, it was expensive, at $50 + tax, but I no longer have to swap in my SL350's smaller battery to take the CB77 out for a ride, and I am gratified to learn the electric starter works. It made it through the Hansen Dam "all Brit" 100 mile ride a week ago with flying colors, and I even used the electric starter once or twice, just to show off to the Norton and Vincent(!) riders.
