Hi Steve,

Yes, I understand completely, and it's also satisfactory to enjoy a perfect running CB72 / 77, with the knowledge that it doesn't run on the lean side in the higher regions (some early Honda's are known for this). Keeps the engine in one piece, including pistons not overheating and collapsing and / or getting stuck, piston pins from burning and small ends for wearing out. Compare it with a yearly / regular medical check up such as blood sugar, cholesterol, weight etc) You can do it yourself of course, but maybe you overlooking something (if you're not a good doctor yourself). Everyone has his own choice in these matters, we're living in a free world.

In my case, I find engine parts too expensive to gamble with,

Yup, I'll probably feel the same about mine once I've finished the powertrain refurb, J-man. As I said though, finding a competent dyno-operator here is like trying to find a teenage virgin in Essex!

Cholesterol? I drive too fast to worry about that! And I'm on the latest liquid diet....... I've already lost two days in the past week.

Seriously though, I've inherited high cholesterol and take Simvastatin 10. And I fully accept your viewpoint on dynos.

There were a bunch of them in Essex when I was there (quite a few years ago, mind you)!

Be careful. I've read some accounts of it breaking.

Here's a video of the Gunson Colortune in action. I only had a second to test it out. I'll get a chance to go much deeper with it tomorrow. The ideal color is a "bunsen burner" blue. Looks like I'm pretty close there. Not a bad tool to test on the fly mixture settings for $50.

Here's a cool link on someone using the Colortune with a more extensive writeup. ColorTune Your Engine

In what way...careless operator or "blowing out"?
Been considering trying it out while riding on a cloudy day (on an uncrowded road)
Not sure it would be bright enough to see.
I think the instructions say something like not operating under full load?
