Cracked Case?

Post by kyle91987 » Fri Jun 11, 2010 8:24 pm

I was breaking down the engine of my CA77 to rebuild it and examine anything that needed any attention and found this. I can feel it with my fingernail and I'm not a metallurgy expert so I don't know if this is a crack in the case or just a casting flaw. Have you seen anything like this? Should I have it welded while I have it apart?

Edit: It's the upper crank case and the crack I'm referring to is the inside. I posted the outside to see if anyone could see something I missed.

I posed the same question and attached a photo in the Restorations area concerning my bike. Though I didn't get an answer from anyone at the time, it seems I have the answer now. I think the crack I was concerned with appears in the same location as yours.

Well, I finally just took a grinder too and sanded the "crack" off. It seems like it was just a casting flaw as it left no lines at all after some light sanding.
