Do you mean you removed the spring clip & the actual filter cover?
And the filter shell was empty? I'm just trying to make sure that you are
talking about the filter cover and not the engine side cover. Some people
aren't aware that the small cylinder shaped piece is a slinger type filter &
doesn't have a filter element in it like most filters do. Understand, I'm not
trying to say anything about your smarts. I fel like I know a fair amount
about these bikes and their motors but, there's still a lot I can learn.
Check it out. This type of filter is to be opened, cleaned and reassembled.

Thanks all for your patience with my ignorance. I thought there was supposed to be some sort of foam or paper-type filter element I was missing, but apparently not.
