Steering Head Bearings
Steering Head BearingsI think I've seen it on here somewhere - are the CB72/77 steering bearings the same diameter as the CB350 which you can readily get needle rollers for?
Ah, now that ssh-750 code is bloody useful as I can now hunt for the cheapest supplier in the UK - Thanks.
Might not need it yet but I'm having real trouble adjusting the plain bearing that's in there now and I never usually have a problem and prefer tapers. For future reference SSH-750 fits a large range of bikes, here's the list lifted from an ebay ad for the part: Honda CBX 250 RSE 80-86 Honda CJ 250 T 77-79 Honda CL 250 SC 81-84 Honda CM 250 TB MC05 249cc 81-84 Honda CN 250 G/H/J/K/L SPAZIO/Helix 86-90 Honda CN 250 M/P/R/S/T/V/X SPAZIO/Helix 91-98 Honda VT 250 FD 83-87 Honda XL 250 K3/K4 78-79 Honda XL 250 S 78 Honda XL 250 SA 80-81 Honda XL 250 SZ 79 Honda CB 350 K4 72-75 Honda CB350F 72-74 Honda CB 360 G5 75 Honda CJ 360 T 78 Honda CB 400 A Honda-Matic 79 Honda CB 400 F/F1 (400/4) 75-77 Honda CB 400 F2 (400/4) 77-79 Honda CB 400 NA 78-80 Honda CB 400 NB 81 Honda CB 400 NC 82-85 Honda CB 400 T 78-80 Honda CBX 400 F/F2 82-85 Honda CM 400 T NC01 79-81 Honda VF 400 FD 83-85 Honda CB 450 DX-K 89-92 Honda CB 450 SG/SJ (import) 86-88 Honda CB 500 F 72-77 Honda CB 500 K1/K2 72-73 Honda CB 500 K3 74 Honda CB 500 T 75-77 Honda CX 500 A 79-80 Honda CX 500 B 80-81 Honda CX 500 CA Custom 79-80 Honda CX 500 CB Custom 81-84 Honda CX 500 CC Custom 82 Honda CX 500 EC Euro Sport 82 Honda CX 500 Z 78-79 Honda FT 500 C 82 Honda GL 500 DC Silverwing PC02 82-85 Honda VT 500 ED 83-86 Honda VT 500 EF 86-88 Honda XBR 500 F/G 85-87 Honda XBR 500 H 87 Honda XBR 500 SJ 88-89 Honda CB 550 F/F1/F2 75-80 Honda CB 550 K1-3 75-79 Honda CB 550 SC Nighthawk 82-83 Honda CBX 550 F2C/F2D 82-84 Honda CBX 550 FC/FD 82-84 Honda CB 650 B 81 Honda CB 650 SC Nighthawk SOHC 81-82 Honda CB 650 SC Nighthawk SOHC 83-84 Honda CB 650 Z/A 79-80 Honda CX 650 Custom RC11 82 Honda CX 650 ED Euro Sport RC12 83 Honda GL 650 D2-D 84 Honda GL 650 D2-E 85-86 Honda VT 700 C Shadow 84-85 Honda CB 750 F/F1 76-77 Honda CB 750 F2 78 Honda CB 750 K0-1 (UptoE.No-1056079) 69-70 Honda CB 750 K1 (From E.No-1056080) 70-71 Honda CB 750 K2 71-72 Honda CB 750 K3 73 Honda CB 750 K4/K5 74-76 Honda CB 750 K6 77 Honda CB 750 K7 77-78 Honda GL 1000 K/K1 (Up to E.No-2002383) 75-77 With the SSH-750 bearings, you can make a steel spacer that's 34.8mm OD, 30.0mm ID, 3.7mm thick. This will install over the steering stem right after the thin stock "washer" that goes on first during reassembly. You can then install the standard Honda grease seal around the spacer, and then the lower tapered bearing. This will restore the standard stem to frame relationship, and the grease seal will keep the grease in and the comtaminants out. Perhaps this will work with the All Balls set, but I've never had occasion to use one of them. Regards, Chase
I just did this and it came out great. Everything I needed was in the ALL BALLS KIT.

Didn't realise that the taper bearings needed a spacer as well. In the end I spent quite a lot of time tweaking the steering head bearings before realising that the short bolt that locks the axle to the mudguard had wrecked the thread in the brake hub, and was moving around and causing the front end knock I was trying to cure by bearing adjustment. I fitted a longer bolt and now the front end feels pretty good.
If anybody in the UK is looking at the INOX fasteners kit for the CB72/77 please don't, if I ever bump into them at one of the shows they'll be in for some "discussion", about how all the small bolts they supply are metric and not JIS, how the rear sprocket castle nuts are too high to pass the swingarm, how the split pins are too large, how the centre stand nuts are the wrong thread etc etc. You get the idea.
