65 CA77--Gear shifting issue. My bike will shift into 1st N 2nd and 3rd just fine. Shifting into gear, 3rd makes a different noise than 1 and 2. Then it will not shift into 4th. I can shift through all these gears while not pulling the clutch. (this only tested while stationary with bike off)

Also in 2nd and 3rd at speed, it sounds like the clutch is taking a little longer to disengage when compared to the time that I release the lever.

There may be multiple issues here...I'm ok with that.

I'll take a wild guess (assuming the CA transmission is similar to a CB): the shift drum bearing on one side (the side on which the gears lock to form "4th" gear) is worn causing the drum, fork and gears to bind. With no load on the gears, it will shift through all the ratios; no such luck when the motor is running.
Or, the bearings in the main shaft are worn, preventing the gears' dog-clutch from aligning under a load.
Or, any other wear causing the sliding and rotating parts to bind under a load.

so this is a case opener, so to speak? Can I replace any of this without opening up the crank case?

I doubt that there's anything you can do without opening it up.

so i am into the transmission, and when i shift by hand (turning the trans and turning the shift drum) everything is smooth.

Like you said there may be multiple issues.I had an issue with a tranny and the shifter stuck and would not go from 1st to 2nd at times and when I got into the tranny everything seemed to be ok.Still not sure what it was or is. I would examine everything in the tranny.Check the brass 14mm bushing and see if it is bad.Not sure if that would create the issue you have? Just pulled one apart that was bad.Also, check the shift drum stay for excessive wear.Did you go over the clutch at all?

I have not looked closely at the clutch. I would like to get new friction discs, but do not know where to look. I have none of the magical wires that are talked about. steel plates seem flat, but i have not thoroughly checked yet.

p.s. does anyone know the rise of stock superhawk bars, and the length of the clutch cable?
