So I've got this interesting metallic spinning sound coming from my left crankcase when the bike is in neutral. As soon as I pull in the clutch it goes away. And as soon as I shift into first or any other gear, it ceases.

I've been pulling the right crankcase off alot lately trying to sort out some clutch issues (read here). There's been a few times where it's gone away after reassembling the right side.

Any idea what this is indicative of? I'm assuming it's related to the improperly adjusted clutch, but I'm curious as to what's going on there.

I think I finally got the carbs sorted out for the most part. Just need to balance everything out nicely. Turns out the main killer was improper float heights with oddly shaped tangs, and improper adjustment of timing in relation to the float height.

I'm pretty curious as to what this sort of "knocking" sound is, and if it's normal or not. Any advice on what I should expect is appreciated.

"knocking sound"

Post by jleewebb » Mon Dec 28, 2009 10:17 pm

Hey Scott, my bike made a sort of a clicking sound from the left side, faster when accelerating, when I first put it together due to kick starter not being indexed properly...could this be what you're experiencing? Not sure how this would work with your weird CL kickstarter setup...hope you get it worked out. --Lee

Scott, that's a pretty loud metal to metal noise! Have you re-checked valve clearance? Check it at TDC, then rotate 360 degrees, and check again.

Hi,

Please, take your stethoscope and locate the sound, if you don't have one, take a large screwdriver and place it on different points on the engine and put your ear against it (screwdriver). This is no joke, try it and locate it, then take a look in a exploded view and make a educated guess.

Valve clearance and timing are perfect. I'll try and isolate it further. Just wondering what else it could possibly be. I'll get a better video as well.
