Just bought one. What year is it?

Post by ivancook » Mon Dec 07, 2009 11:08 pm

Just bought a CB77. Hoping you all could help me with the year.

CB77 - 1021946
CB77E - 1021857

It's titled as a 1966, but the front (Type I) forks are throwing me. Is it really a '65 or early '66?

Thanks in advance.

Haven't removed the tank yet, but I'm gonna try to tonight. It looks like it's seeping old gas out of the lower seams, so I may need a new one.

type 2 forks

Post by jleewebb » Tue Dec 08, 2009 10:36 pm

My Bill Silver book says type two forks came in at frame # CB77F1030130. Same book gives frame #'s CB77F1000001 through 1056432 (undiferentiated) for '65 through '67 models. I understand it wasn't unusual for a '65 model sold in'66 to be titled in '66. Also not unusual for a wiring harness from previous year to end up on a next year's model, so you can't really go by that either.

That bike looks better than I remember seeing it on Craigslist. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Good news:
New to me parts are coming. Got a new fuel tank, rear stays, and battery in route.
Got the tank off and the wiring harness is dated 1965. It's titled as a 1966, which makes sense if the '65 sold in '66. If anyone can tell from the serial numbers for sure, please let me know.

Bad news:
While removing the old tank, I accidently broke the nipple/inlet where gas connects to the right carburetor. I guess that thing had gotten pretty brittle.

It looks like it is separate from the top carb assembly and bolted on, but the parts manual does not list a part number for it. Anyone know what the part number would be, or where I might find one?

Hopefully that means good luck from now on.
