Picked up a 1966 CB77!

Post by phactory » Sun Dec 06, 2009 8:59 am

Hello all! I found this gem a couple of weeks ago! It is a mostly original rider. Seems the fenders and sidecovers have been repainted but all of the red is original. The seat also seems to have been recovered. There is no Honda logo on the back though. Should it be gold or white?

I took it for a ride and it runs pretty damn good! Amazing how entertaining it is to ride! Hopefully I will make the Moto Giro up in Vermont next year!

The only thing that bothered me on my test ride was some chattering from the front end during braking. Upon closer inspection I found that the steering head bearings were loose, and most likely shot! I called my Honda dealer and inquired about an ALL BALLS tapered roller bearing kit, but ALL BALLS does not specify one for a CB77, but thanks to my parts guy, he did some investigation and said that the same kit that fits a CB750 (1969-1976) will also fit the CB77. A follow up call to ALL BALLS, pretty much confirms that. Is that what List members have found?

I did get an original set of mirrors and grips from my Dealer and they will be going on soon. Does anyone re-pop the rubber that goes on the centerstand? What about a side stand for the bike? I know that Honda lists one in their fiche but I imagine that they are pretty damn hard to find, and expensive when they come up for sale.

Does anyone have a paint code for this red or a good source for touch up paint?

Thanks, Phil

And the view from the seat! What is the tab on the left side of the top triple tree for?

Very nice! Much nicer that the one I just acquired. The side stands come up on eBay, I think there's a couple there now, for a price. I've seen the center stand rubber on eBay, too.

Congratulations, a very nice find.

Very Nice! I believe the HONDA on the back of the seat was a gold color.

Thanks for the info! I just put a set of original mirrors on it and replaced the left grip with an original one. Any one interested in a practically brand new CRG mirror in black?

Thanks, Phil

Phil -- the headlight switch should point the other way --
