Caterpillar 1M-PC Test Equipment and Procedure
The Caterpillar 1M-PC test uses a Caterpillar 1Y73 single-cylinder indirect injection, diesel test engine with a two-valve arrangement. The test engine has a 5.125-inch bore and a 6.5-inch stroke, resulting in a displacement of 134.1 cubic inches. The compression ratio is 16.4:1, and this engine uses rectangular rings.



Guess one could wonder where the 30wt nd oils is on these tests...

Each api test picks a engine that had a pronounced problem with either rings, or valve, or pistions, or cam followers, bearing, coldstart wear or other problem and by testing the oil on the engine that exhibited the worse wear in that category set up a test regimene. However some are reduced down to the 4 ball wear test or cold starting test where its measure without an engine involved, such as cold flow charactoristics...By finding the worst wear device the tests quickly show how the oil performs in all engines that dont have high pressure or wear charteristics.

Its pretty good reading for those who care to know.

Had a similar problem many years ago when my bike, a CB77 was a 305. It took several seizures to work out that it was running lean all the time. On long uphill grades it would lock up and then free No problem with a short cooling down. Pull in the clutch and coast for a short time was enough. You might have to have a good look at the plugs to check the mixture is ok

I can remember when we threw a paper route on our honda sport 50s.. quaker and pennsoil were from the clean stocks and thus generated better base oils than the gulf and other oils. The more pure bases endup giving a slightly better oil back when there were no additives and oil was just oil. But even back then we found that certain bikes locked more often that others and the only difference seem to be the oils. It wasnt till years later that I found out there was a significant differnce in the oil, the amount of wax and ash in the oils. So even back in the eary and mid 60s, there was already a big differnece in the performance of oils... In the late 60s, additives started to make the scene and the difference started to become even more pronounced. As I said in other posts, we notice that gulf oil would brake down and foam in the hondas and lock up more.. But back then we didnt know why. Then came the 90, the 160, the 305... then the driver license came and I went to 4 wheels.
