Primary Drive Sprocket: Loose! (on clutch basket)

Post by cfloren » Tue Sep 22, 2009 12:06 am

I'm hoping someone with more experience than myself can tell me if the clutch basket (aka clutch outer) and its steel primary chain sprocket should have any rotational play.
I've got 2 clutch baskets that look identical to me, except the sprocket on one is free to rotate for a degree or so, whereas the other sprocket is completely tight.

I'm wondering if the steel rivets have loosened up allowing the sprocket to rotate. If so, can I do anything to tighten them up? The aluminum fingers are not worn much so I'd like to use it.

Or do I have the "cush drive" clutch basket?

I've looked through the transmission forum and haven't found any pictures of the cush drive clutch basket, to compare mine to. So I'm not sure what it looks like.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

cf, I'm pretty sure that LM said that cush drive can out in 1965 and newer, I'm not an engineer but it dosn't seem the sprocket should be loose, it would promote failier in my truckers mind. Good luck cf.

I, for one, would be interested to know how the cush drive is achieved, if Ed would care to enlighten us. Maybe a photo too?

On the links to the left of page in yellow click search and type cush drive and it will give you 10 sites in forum to look up. I'm pretty sure some of then are LM's posts.

Thanks for the responses guys (or should I say, "Steves"). I am thinking that the sprocket ring has loosened up over the years, and this is a non-cush-drive clutch basket. But I wanted to ask to be sure, since I don't know what the cush drive basket looks like.

Does anyone have a picture of one?

Is this a cush drive basket? http://www.honda305.com/forums/download.php?id=2448

(picture borrowed from allthumbs' post in this topic: http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4038, in which I think LM stated that this was a cush drive basket)

Here's one from aCB77 motor # 1055222. It's not cleaned up, it's from a donor motor.
