I got to thinking do I really need to tear the whole engine apart to rebuild it I shouldnt have to tear the transmission apart should I. I have a D&K engine rebuild kit but it has a bunch of gaskets that I dont know where they all go

You do not have to take any parts off the bottom end to rebuild top end as far as I know. Also, I found out that if you do decide to split the bottom half you can just lift the whole shaft with the gear that chain rides on up and take chain off.You need to take off small bolt that holds guide for shifting arm to lift bottom of case off and take stator and starter gear off also first. I just did that when I pulled the bottm half apart on my engine. I've taken three of these bottom ends apart and learned after #2 what to take off. You probably have gaskets for end caps for cam shaft, chain adjuster, oil pump on bottom of case, cylinder base gasket head gasket and valve cover gasket, orings for valve cover caps, maybe oring for carb spacer, small orings for two studs on head and left side cover.
