Test. What's wrong with this bike?

Post by okie88 » Sat Nov 29, 2008 6:19 pm

Somebody help me define ORIGINAL.

This Super Hawk just sold on eBay for $6500.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... :IT&ih=015

Is that the seat that came as ORIGINAL on a 1966 Super Hawk?

Did the ORIGINAL seat have white lettering or gold lettering on the back? Try Bronze.

Are those handlebar grips ORIGINAL?

Are those ORIGINAL 1966 fork sliders?

Are those ORIGINAL Mirrors?

Did the 1966 Super Hawk come ORIGINAL with metal tank badges?

Is the paint on the fenders ORIGINAL?

What else can you find that might not really be ORIGINAL?

First off the bike is a 1965.
The seat should have bronze HONDA.
The bars are not correct.
The rider foot rubbers are actually passenger rubbers.
I think passenger foot rubbers are rider foot rubbers.
The mirror shape is correct.
The speedo is wrong year.
The grips are AM.
The air intake tubes are missing the wire spring.
The intake valve vent tube isn't going to the right side air filter just out in the open/air.
Missing rubber bumper/buffer on the center stand so the stand won't rub steel to steel.
Wrong bolt holding eight side muffler to frame.
Metal tank badges are after issue.
Rust on top of starter motor.
Filthy center stand.
Throttle cable much to long so routed wrong.
Can't tell what the wire/tube is from top of engine and behind the carbs is.
If seat mounting bolts were correct they would be visible.
I think head pipes are after market. ...................lm

I am just a beginner here. What years were the lower front forks silver? I read this in another post, but it just hit me that some are black, some are silver. It looks like the early year frames were black and the late years were silver?

The more I look at pictures, I am starting to notice these things. This is kind of fun!

Thanks,

Gunner

The aluminum sliders came along sometime in 1966.
They were the silver painted issue.
B4 that the steel sliders were painted frame color of the bike..
BLACK/BLACK RED/RED BLUE/BLUE WHITE/WHITE ...............lm

Interesting throttle cable routing; I see what you mean, Ed.

I agree with Gun: most of the other cables, save for the tacho, are possibly 'original'; most of the rest of the machine looks 'restored'.

The header pipes have a horrendous pipe-bender impression.

Just an observation: the rear brake cable has a horribly sharp exit angle from the adjuster; stuff like that does make me cringe!

Interestingly enough, the seat decal turns bronze in the lower rear-shot pics.

Sold for strong money!
