CA77 Clutch Cable Routing

Post by Dogsbd » Fri Aug 22, 2008 6:59 am

I bought a clutch cable for my Dream about a year ago and just last week got to the point of installing it. Turns out it was for an early Dream and too long, so I ordered another from "Retro Bikes" and got it this week. Went to install and it almost seem too short.

It enters the headlight housing on the left side, passes to the right of the fork stem and then should I:

1. Just route it along the right side of the frame and into the clutch housing

or

2. Route it into the frame, back through the frame and back out near the carb and to the clutch housing.

I tried 1 above, but it is too short especially when turning the handlebars to the left.

What was the factory routing?

No one has a CA77?

Anyway, the cable I received from Retro Bikes ( http://www.olypen.com/retro/22870-272-010.htm ) is definitely too short and I can't find any way to route it that will make up for the shortness.

Just too elaborate a bit, the original cable I bought that turned out to be too long measure 57 inches overall with a 52 inch cable housing. The second cable measures 44.5 inches overall with a 40 inch cable housing.

I'm guessing I need something around 48 inches.

Sounds like that 40"-jacketed cable is for a CB with intermediate 'bar or maybe a C/CS model. The CA/CSA both have the high western-style cruiser 'bar. My CB with flat 'bar is 38", and that's still a little on the long side.
Suggest you PM Ed about the routing thru the frame bit.
