Mid-Ohio AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days
No problem -- let us know how it goes and what you ended up finding there, parts-wise.
I think Triumph is the featured marque this year (50th anniversary of the Bonneville, I believe), so they are likely to have some kind of display on the back side of the race track. VJMC booth is over on that side too. Saturday, of course, is the best day to go, and if you get there by 8am it's sure to already be a buzz of activity.
I think you answered most of my questions/concerns, only a few remain.
what's the concession's situation like ? is food/drink there edible and/or reasonable? was wondering if i need to load up coolers to last through the 3 days. Any idea on the 'camping' situation? any running water? porta-potties? the key to camping is preparedness. 3 days of no showers makes for a stinky ride home. i don't mind so much, but you know how wives are with these things ... Whats the evening/nightlife situation like ? lotsa people hanging around partying and stuff, or getting rested for the next day of swapmeeting? Is there alcohol allowed on the grounds? once again, cooler preparedness .... from what i've seen i'm thinking it's probably pretty reserved as far as biker meets go. is it more of a family friendly atmoshpere than a 'show us your tits' fest? i'm game for either, but again ... the wife ... would at least like to forewarn her to soften the blow ; ) i unfortunately won't be taking a bike, none are quite ready for such an affair ... next year <smile>. thanks for the info Vince !
Wow, all good questions. I believe they do have camping available on site, and I don't think it's strictly for vendors. As far as alcohol goes, I did sit down with folks and had a beer with them in the evening, so I'm assuming it's fine. Porta-potties galore....not sure about the showers. To be sure, though, you might want to visit the Mid-Ohio racecourse website to get all the particulars in that regard.
As far as the atmosphere goes, it's definitely not Sturgis. I think on either Friday or Saturday night they have a ride out to the dirt track races nearby. They don't have a Saturday evening banquet or anything like that. Saturday morning, Motorcycle Classics magazine sponsors the 'Ride 'Em, Don't Hide 'Em', which is a lot of fun. Food on-site is okay. There is a sit-down place called the the Motorhead Cafe, as well as concessions selling the usual (hamburgers, fries, breakfast things, etc). No sushi or Lobster Newburg, unfortunately. As far as 'nightlife' goes, I'm probably not the best person to address that, as I stayed at a Victorian b&b, and in the evening would head back there and hang out with the guests on the back porch. There is a roadhouse type bar in town, and a few restaurants, but Lexington is a relatively small place. I think when Honda is the featured marque, I'll head back out there..... 3BEAN,
Been going there for the past 13-14 years. As far as camping I can't say about the showers and such at the campground. I always have a swapmeet spot and have camped at my spot several times, as well as stayed at motels nearby. There is showers at the swap meet area so I assume that they are available for the campground as well. The showers are public and can be crowded and could intimidate a modest person. My wife tells me that the Ladies has an attendant. Can't verify that. Don't even want to try. I would expect that the campground is orderly and well kept. Bring in what you want for a day or two. It's fairly easy to leave and visit the stores and whatnot around town. Bucyrus, Mansfield, Marion, and other towns are not that far away. Remember that Lexington is geared up for the racetrack crowd. All the locals are very appreciative of they trade they get from an event such as this one. As far as the crowd goes, no wet T's here. You would have a hard time finding misconduct. One of the most respectful large crowds I have ever been exposed to. This is an AMA event so nonsence is nonexistant. I've left my space for an hour or two, with a few thousand dollars worth of parts and bikes sitting around. Never had an item so much as touched. As far as food goes, I've eaten at the stands and they are priced reasonably. A cold beer or two are not going to send you to the poor house. Get a big cooler for your vehicle and a tote to carry. When my wife goes with me, she has always enjoyed the people and just looking at stuff she doesn't understand. She's not a bike enthusiast. She's a 54 year old school Principal. I gather from your post that you are a machinist by trade as am I. Stop by my swap meet space ,CC 13, and we'll talk a little shop and a lot of bike. PM me before I leave Tennesse on the 22nd, and you won't have to worry about lunch. I"m always cooking BB Ribs, Brats, Chicken, Ribeyes, or something and never run out of Mic Light. Mark
