Baffles vs Snuff or Nots

I have a '63 Dream 305 and it came with Snuff or Nots equipped in the original mufflers. Amazingly, the bike runs okay with the Snuff or Nots closed or open! Were there some type of removable baffles in the muffler ends at one time? If so, mine have long since disappeared. If I were to want to remove the Snuff or Nots, what baffle could be fitted and where might I find one?

they come equipped with removable baffles, which seem to be always removed. you can get baffles and other repro goodies from apex cycle http://www.apexcycle.com/ca77.htm
