C77 heavy duty clutch springs?

Post by DianneB » Tue Apr 19, 2016 10:45 am

Took the 1967 Purple Dream for a boot this morning after replacing the friction plates in the suck-solid clutch and now I can break the clutch loose in every gear! :( The adjustment is as good as I can get. The clutch starts to take up with only a small release of the lever and, when fully released, there is slack in the clutch cable.

When I put the clutch together with the new plates, the springs seemed a bit anemic and the pull on the clutch lever is pretty easy as well. I have heard slipping clutches were a common problem and that somebody used to make "heavy duty" clutch springs for these.

Does anybody have a part number for heavier springs or a supplier for heavier springs?

Other than that, she is running pretty nice. It has good acceleration for a single-carb 305 but man is it LIGHT in the wind (compared tp my Harley LOL!)

I think the "810" springs are the heavier ones.

810 Springs

The 810 springs are too stiff for any street application. Unless you crush rocks in your bare hands, you will find the clutch lever takes two hands to pull it in and I'm not sure they allow full release of the clutch. I have Barnett clutch springs in my CL77 and I think they are the best choice.

I just put in new Barnett springs and they cured a slipping clutch in my 1963 CB77. A bit more pressure at the lever, but not bad.

All in all, a cheap fix. Your mileage may vary.

Got a set of new 22401-323-003 springs coming. They are supposed to be heavier than stock but not as stiff as 22401-275-810.
