30W Non-detergent - Or is there something better?
To my logical mind, what you guys have been explaining makes total sense. And Bill's anecdote about the tractor motor gives true insight into the whys and wherefores.
I've often thought about how well the spinning filter separates the crud from the oil at lower engine speeds, but never gave a logical thought to the ratio of the difference between idle and higher engine speeds. Of course, anyone with a basic knowledge of physics can work out that centrifugal force has exponential properties, not linear. But most of us don't give it a further thought; it's just there. It obviously absorbs a small amount of power -- in this case BHP -- and that's the reason I attributed to the fact that these filters no longer seem to exist inside motors. I advise, sometimes, to do as I have done with my CB's electrical system: to make small improvements in charge rate and small savings in consumption. The results speak for themselves http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... 4010c18cf2 and are all reversible for shows, should you need. It makes the bike less correct but, sometimes, more reliable and, thus, more efficient and usable. Lubrication technology is not something that stands still, so we need to sometimes move with it; even if, like me, for the sake of convenience [of purchase-ability]. But mainly out of love of the machine. Jensen, out of interest: which bike's magnetic drain plug fits well, please?
Hi steve,
I made it out off an original plug. Make a hole from the flat side toward the inside (6 mm) and approx.0.5 mm less deep than the bolt is. put some rare earth magnet in and fill it up with epoxy. http://www.magnet-shop.net/Neodym-Magne ... 872c44f19e (it's a German site, but I think you'll manage) Jensen assembly of Japanese motorcycles requires great peace of mind (Pirsig)
Many thanks, Jensen. And, talking of Jensons, how about my fellow countryman, Mr Button? 2009 F1 World Champion! We British don't have too much to be proud of in the grand scheme of things at present, but today we DO!! And pride in Ross Brawn and his people! World Champion constructors from the ashes of last year's BAR-Honda team. And to think that at the close of 2008 none of them was certain of even having a job! Also pleased for Mark Webber, who won today's Interlagos race. I'd also have been equally pleased if Rubens (Barrichello) had won the World Championship though..... had it not been for a puncture it would've been a close-run thing.
Anyway, on with life. Thanks, too, for the PM with the oil cooler pics. I was interested also in the type of winkers your CB has, as I know that they were standard fitment on models sent to Germany & Holland (and some Canadian, it's documented). I have to say that they're not what I was expecting. Were they fitted at the point of market-entry (or the dealer) do you know? And is your switch the same as mine?:

Hi steve,
Congratulations with Jenson Button, I know the englisch are made about F1, so jou must be too. No, my front winkers are on the steer (dutch), and not on the ears of the headlight. I bought it when these winkers where bolt on the headlight, but I also got the original stuff with it. The previous owner just liked it, same style as the CB350, 400, 500, 550, 750 etc. Jensen assembly of Japanese motorcycles requires great peace of mind (Pirsig)
steve i use an aftermarket magnetic oil plug for the c50,70,90 it fits and works quite well you have to use spanner size 13 instead of the normal honda 14 these plug are aviable aroud the world i supose fred.nl Being a young feller such as myself, I can't resist but to do my part to egg on this thread.
I will agree that newer oil is higher quality and better technology than the 30w non detergent. I will agree that dvd's are better quality than VHS tapes. I will not be putting dvd's in my VCR. '65 CB77
