Hi Fred,

I want to apologize about the answer on your statements, I saw that I pointed the answers directly to you, but that wasn't my intension. I couldn't edit it anymore after I read it back on the forum.
It's intended as an answer in general to all these kind of issue's when chancing to a synthetic oil.

I'm not a reseller of synthetic oil and I don't have any connections with Castrol, mobil or any other oil company / brand. I'm discussing this point a long time with a lot of owners of vintage motorcycles

Since the CB72 and CB77, even today, can be seen as an high performance engine with around 100 hp per litre, it's wise to use a high performance oil in an high performance engine, especially when used as one (I do that on a regular base).

To read further about this subject (everyone whose interested) please visit the site mentioned here :

http://www.nordicgroup.us/oil.htm

I think that the info on this site is written clearly and reflect a neutral opinion about the subject oil synthetic and non synthetic,

Steve and G-man,

Tanks for your replys, I really appreciate them. G-man, I''m not trying doing the work of the Mr. Honda better, and I'm not criticizing him either. Even he could not know what happens with particles suspended in fluids, a lot of the research is done afterwards. A lot of things we know now weren't available at that time, but I think I don't have to explain that to anyone.

When the design of the oil -pump / filter combination is completed and I'm satisfied with the results over time, I will include pictures of the pump and it's internals on this forum. I also will include pictures of the bypass where the filter was placed in my engine,

I too would not criticise the work that Mr Honda did for us. Every engineering decision is a compromise and that compromise is constantly changing with new knowledge, techniques and materials.

Total respect to you Jensen; and I'd love to know how and where to 'loop' the oilway, as I intend fitting an oil cooler to my CB. I know it's been done, as I saw one for sale on eBay last year, with a YouTube link showing the bike running and being ridden. The cooler was way too big for the motor and was fitted beneath the starter motor, thus reducing the ground clearance. I'll be looking into different types of cooling matrix.

More oil in the system will aid cooling of the motor and, obviously, reduce the oil temperature and loss of viscosity.

Steve

Take a look at this from the eurospares web site.

Hi Steve,

John Duggen, that was the guy you reffered to.
I did a lot of mailings with him about the changes he made to his machine,

I can place the text on the forum, he describes how he did it, and why.
Later he sold the machine, the one you saw on ebay.

Thanks for the link there, G. Interesting pic showing the oilway diversion; food for thought, although that method would mean doing away with my starter motor. I know where to start looking when I tear it down, though.

Jensen, I'd be very interested in reading your dialogue with John, please.

Thanks guys!
