Got it. It's not required though, right? I am still curious about that. It seems like a pretty awesome little project. I have a master welder working with me now, so that portion is relatively simple.
On one of the other photos, showing the 6-speed conversion, why is the clutch and oil filter on the wrong side? Not really necessary, no. Jerry manages to make amazing race bikes with the regular 2 valve SOHC head. The DOHC heads are more to make a bike that looks like a CR72/77 which was DOHC 8-valve.
The 6-speeder you were looking at has the engine upside-down so the parts appear to be on the wrong side. A lot of welding and re-machining goes in to that project to get the parts from a later Honda transmission in there. Because of the shaft arrangement and the gear primary drive the clutch turns backwards compared with a stock CB77. G

Great thread, I'm amazed at how far the limit is pushed, 500cc! Several yrs back I bought a CL72 from a scrapper it had a Connely Cam plate riveted to the point cover and CB450 carbs. I got it running using stock carbs and in the process broke three kickstart joints. When I pulled it down it had 450 sleeves, pistons, and Connley cam, I think it worked out to 412cc.
Ellis Holman built one using a GS400 Suzuki end, Les Barker of Little Engine Service in Vancouver, WA did all the machine work to make it fit. Talked to Les about the project yrs ago, quite a process! Something I don't see in my future but enjoying the stories and pictures!! Just got off the phone with the good folks at Megacycle. To do the cams would be $399 (plus a core that I'd have to provide). Additionally, they highly recommend sending the rocker arms in to have them hard-faced. They're $74 each (x4 arms). So you're basically at $700 + a core (I see a set of cams on eBay right now for $93+shipping). For my particular application, they recommend #121-60, which is for 'fast scrambles, TT. Mid-range and top-end power.' This is because I already have the bog-bore kit, the racing valve springs with the titanium caps.
So I'll have to mull this over to see if it's worth the $$$ to have it done, plus the $$$ for John install it for me.
Well I think I may be taking the plunge, bit by bit. I just bought a set of used camshafts, and I have my eye on a set of rockers at the moment. This will likely be a winter project, but at least I'm acquiring the necessary parts to do the deed.
UPDATE -- the rockers seller just accepted my offer! So I have a set of those too!
