Great info! If I understand this correct, a CA77 frame with the 1961 SN (CA77-10001 to 11980) could've had either the "breather tower" engine SN (CA77E-110001 to 110900) or the subsequent design SN (CA77E-110901 to 111400).
It would be cool to find something that would identify which design was in my bike originally...but, on the other-hand, maybe it would be better just to default to the later version to take advantage of the several design improvements.

1962 CA77 with Later Engine?
Correct engineThere is no way to tell which engine came on your bike originally. The general rule for these bikes is that the engine and frame numbers will be within about 200 units. LM has seen several that were farther apart than that.
So.... I guess yours could have gone either way in terms of whether it had a breather tower or not. That said, unless you have a penchant for spending a lot of money on parts, I would "assume" that it had the later style without the breather tower. If it were the later engine without the breather tower, it would look a lot like the engine you have with the exception of the number on the top case having 5 digits instead of 7. There may be a few other minor differences, but, someone more knowledgeable than me will have to tell you what those are. Your bike does have a great story. If it were me, I would get that bike running and ride the heck out of it so more people can enjoy that story with you.
