Cleaning a sticky clutch?

Post by DianneB » Wed Mar 30, 2016 2:40 pm

What do ya'll recommend for cleaning the plates of a sticky clutch on a 1967 Dream?

I notice last summer that after sitting for a couple of weeks that I would have to "break the clutch free" before riding. After sitting all winter, she's stuck GOOD so I am going to have to take it apart this time and give it a good scrub but WHAT WITH?

I know I should probably replace all the plates but maybe later - it is time to RIDE right now!

I also have this issue with my Dream and a friend who rides his frequently also is prone to it.

Brake cleaner is great. I even get a little saucy and take a little fine grit sand paper to the metal spacers.

I got new friction plates for my clutch and put them in today (after thorough cleaning).

The old plates were stuck together so hard that I had to pry them apart with a screwdriver!

I think someone added Crazy Glue to my oil LOL!

Mine were the same way.....by the time I got mine pried apart and cleaned with brake cleaner the friction material was flaking off, and I figured it wasn't good to have that floating around in the oil!

Got a good used set of metal type from LM and was good to go.
