rebuilding the clutch basket
rebuilding the clutch baskethey all, something very interesting i found when doing some maintenance on my clutch which i had never noticed before, my engine numbers indicate that its a 1963 but i have a later 5 plate clutch with the metal core discs, which means either the basket was replaced at some point or the top case is 1963 but the rest of the engine is later? What do you think?
also i was planning on replacing my clutch springs, i bought a set of NOS ones but their the older shorter springs, should i replace them anyway or just stick with the stock longer ones ? heres a pic of one of my friction discs and my old spring next to the NOS (shorter) one Untitled by beatboxer89, on Flickr Untitled by beatboxer89, on Flickr -hill '65 s90

Re: rebuilding the clutch basketYou probably just have a 1963 motor with an updated clutch. I just rebuilt my clutch and the conclusion I reached is that the thick friction discs that make up a 4 disc system are not available anymore and you are forced (to your benefit) to go to a 5 plate setup.
The next owner of my bike will find a 1965 CA77 Dream with a 1963-1964 motor with a 5 disc clutch.
clutch platesHi folks, on the subject of clutch plates, i am rebuilding mine right now. I have the friction disks (yes, 5) and wanted to replace the plates. When i removed them, 4 were identical with 7 notches on the inner "ring", while the outer most disk (closer to the transmission) has no notches.
Is that ok to put 5 identical ones? I don't see anything where these notches attach or not. No sure why they r here. Also, when i look for replacement parts on ebay, i found several one that look similar to mine but they seem to have different part #. Does it make any difference? Thank you Cheers PS: i have a 62 Dream 305 (CA77E-211680) The more i look online for info, the more confused i get. I see setup with 5 and 6 plates, different part #, plate A, plate B, etc... Is it due to the fact that the total thickness of the clutch plates and friction disk is what matters?
clutch plate questioncan you still get them and are the clutch plates for cl and cb 77 the same?
Re: clutch plate questionYou should find the first disc is thicker than the other 4.
Those are the ones you want to use so if you can wire wheel them or blast them you will be OK. Are your friction aluminum core with black material. If so they are what you need and can be reused. Get in touch if you need help. .......lm
Hi LM.
All five plates were about the same thickness, about 1.5mm, although the first one (plate A,closest to the transmission) was differently looking. I did order a NOS plate A but didn't put it in as i was 3.0mm thick and the one I had inside was 1.5mm. Being a noob at clutch rebuilding I was worried about doing something wrong. But maybe who ever worked on it last didn't place the correct parts in. What do you think?
