1962 CA77 with Later Engine?

Again....thanks to all for the help! I'm still in the learning stage about this bike and it's history so I expect my questions are just starting. I'll keep you posted if I find out anything from past owners.

G-Man, Seems odd that the levers and Perches were swapped...but I guess if someone was looking for those early parts. Same with the tank badges and who knows what else.

It's still too early to know for sure what I'm going to do with it. I bought it because I believed it was an original low mileage (pic) bike. Looking close, I can see that the engine swap was barely complete...loose bolts and wiring not connected. I doubt it ever ran after the swap...although someone did put gas in the tank and Carb. I've since drained it and cleaned the carb so it doesn't stink up the living room. Returning it to the correct configuration still appeals to me so, maybe with all of your help, I figure out what's wrong and plan to make it right.

I apologize for being off topic but since we discussed Honda Serial Numbers on this thread earlier, I wanted to share a pic of my frame number. Doesn't exactly align with Honda's list...but maybe that's not so unusual? MGH

Based on the list in G's first post, it looks like a '61 frame, probably titled in '62. Wiring harness will probably say 1961. I like the spirit of taking it back to original, and having it in your living room. I just came in from a 50-deg shop. Married?

We're tearing the house apart in the spring to re-build...so for now, I'm pretending it's my man-cave. The Dream does make a nice decoration...even my wife likes it.

I think I read the Honda list wrong. I took the title literally assuming the frame numbers were on the left and engine on the right. I see it now. Thanks! MGH

OK, back on topic, "Motors".

I've been researching a little and see 1 set of early engines cases on ebay with the breather tower that G mentioned. The numbers indicate that it's a C77 engine versus CA77. Any idea when those style engine cases were discontinued? I'd just like to confirm that my original engine, SN range CA77E-110001-111400, was also that design. Any insight? MGH

Honda made a number of changes to the lubrication and breathing arrangements later in '61 I think. These cases will not work with the top end you have at the moment. Also you would need to check the numbers carefully to see if your numbers denote a breather tower engine or not.

I was just looking at the Honda production figures. It looks like Honda made 1980 frames, but only 1400 engines. What the heck?

My '66 parts book refers to 4 different C771101 top cases with "A", "C", "DW1" and "E" suffixes. It looks like only the "A" top case had the breather at the back of the case. I don't know what the changes were in the other cases.

I say only the "A" top case had the breather because it has to have a matching lower case (C721102C). If you look at the parts diagram, the #10 "Spring, Breather supporting" has to fit into a square hole in the lower case at the back of it. You can see just the edge of that square hole in the parts diagram. Look straight up above where the "27" is in the diagram and you can see the back of the lower case takes a jog forward to make that hole.

Both the C721102C lower case and C771101A top case ended at CA77E 110900.

BTW MGH if you are looking to get a top case in what would have been in the numbers matching range be sure you get not only the matching top and lower cases, but also #7, #9 and #10 parts as well. They are pretty hard to find.
