How do I get these bolts out? any suggestions

Post by jsmith1107 » Sat Feb 23, 2013 7:38 pm

I need to figure out how to get these bolts out---the person before me did a great job of really screwing up the phillips head slot.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Given that there isn't much room to get creative and slot the heads for flat screwdrivers, you really have two options... Get a nice impact driver and give it a few tries. If this doesn't work, use a drill and a bit wide enough to get the bolt's head off (start with a 1/4" drill bit). Easy with the drill to avoid marring surfaces or drilling too much. All you need is to drill enough to pass the head and it should come right off.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Marco

You can get a extractor/drill combination tool at local hardware stores. They sometime come in packs of three all different sizes. ONE SIDE IS A SMALL REVERSE CUT DRILL BIT AND THE OTHER IS AN EXTRACTOR. I just chuck it in my cordless and put it in reverse drill it then turn the bit around and run the drill slow and it will come out. We even use then to get exhaust manifold studs out of cylinder heads on trucks.

I've had a lot of success with the screw extractor kit from lowe's. Make sure you get the right size (will be #3) of extractor. It is a single piece bit that is two sided. I didn't have any success with my cheapo traditional extractor set (the one that is one drill bit and one extractor). The lowe's one has saved me a lot of frustration and easily worth the $10 or so.

If you have access to a tig welder, you can weld a bolt onto the end and and extract it. I have had to use this technique a few times and it works well. If you try to use an easyout, please be careful not to bust the easyout off in the process, makes it a b...h to get out. Another way, if you can, is to get a small cutting wheel (dremal) into the area, you can grind a slot and use a flat head screw driver for removal. Usually, the best way is to tack weld a bold on and then extract with a socket. JMHO.

soak with pb blaster and apply heat. then use a flat screwdriver (i've used cold chisels and wood chisels also) and hammer to break the offending fastener loose.
