I was degreasing my CB77 cylinder head yesterday when I noticed that an inch or so long piece of the uppermost fin - where it joins with the valve head - is broken off. I'm feeling fairly confident that this won't have any measurable effect on the bike's performance or ability to dissipate heat. ...right?
I know I should probably just button this one up and forget about it, but I'm having persistent and delusional visions of restoration perfection and can't seem to ignore it.
How easy are these to repair? I have a Dream cylinder head that could be used as a fin donor. I also have a friend who's a professional welder. See where I'm going with this?
Broken FinBroken Fin'63 CA77 - Giving me all kinds of headaches.
'64 CA77 - Patiently waiting it's turn '65 CB77 - A 'great winter project' It won't effect the performance.
Just leave it, it's an old bike. Tiny imperfection's tells it's old, used, lived a life, and add's character to the bike. But that's just my opinion. If you wanna spend money on just a tiny broken off fin, that's your decision. I don't think it's worth the money and effort. And I also don't think that this can be welded properly. At least, not without hours of work on repolishing and finishing the weld-spot. Re: Broken FinI've repaired many with excellent results using TIG welding prosess. Just weld and grind.
Everything must be very clean. Vee out the joint if your butt welding two peices or just build up the fin with rod. Preheat the part in a oven for 1 plus hour @350 degee. Use 4043 filler metal. Good luck, Tim
