timing chain adjustment question

that means it was too tight before. (or worse)

this shaft is spring loaded
it only releases its spring force when you loosen that pinch bolt.
it sets the tension. (at the moment)
then you lock it down. (freezing that setting)
best is to follow the book on how to do this.
follow the procedure,
i presume you have that.

on mine, i cleaned mine all up so it smooth as silk and will not jam.
a good plan after 50 years.
keep in mind all the organic guides and roller all will be bad.
and if bad, the adjuster will not be consistent.

there is no normal (by eye)
the chain must be allowed to relax against the roller and rod and spring.
with that relaxed (under spring pressure)it sets the proper chain tension.
then you lock the set screw
this locks that new tension permanently. or until the next service point on the time miles schedules.

if yours moved out, that means it was too tight. nothing more.

there are many cars like this too.
some one live spring.
and
others just like the 305 , you set it and lock it down for 60k miles . (my G16B has that)
