What's the best way to free a frozen engine?

Post by scum » Tue Oct 10, 2006 5:15 am

I've been gathering parts for my '65 SuperHawk and as winter closes in I'll be tearing it down. The motor is stuck solid and has a broken rocker arm. I picked up another head so I'll have a rocker arm. I've got a new set of rings and a top end gasket set and a repair manual. Problem is the motor is too stuck to take apart. I've removed the plugs and valve adj. caps and the innards have been soaking in PB Blaster for a month or so. I removed the left case cover, no water came out, just oil. I removed the oil filter and it's drive chain. I loosened the valve adjusters. Still no movement when I try the crank bolt.

Should I try to remove the clutch basket and primary chain?
Should I try to heat the cylinders and cam?
Thanks.
Happy motoring...brother scum

Method I have seen used is to pull head(need to get to the masterlink to get cam chain off or grind a link off) then use a a steering wheel puller to press on seized piston.Stack various sockets on studs and install acorn nuts for leverage.

Before you pull the head, try heat, it worked for me. Use a propane torch and get the head up close to operating temperature by moving the flame all around the fins (carbs and spark plugs removed, no solvents in the bores). Then try turning the rotor bolt with a long-handled wrench. If it doesn't work, send the bike my way, I've been looking for a 1965 or earlier CB77. --Randall

Siezed Piston

Post by winsur4 » Sun Nov 26, 2006 11:07 pm

Generally the piston siezed is the one with the valve open when the bike was parked. I use the steering wheel puller as above, but I modify it by cutting off a valve stem of an old valve and inserting it in center bolt of the puller in place of the whatchamacallit that allows for the puller to be tightened but not bind. The valve works nicely to center the puller on the piston, and increased the surface area to keep from damaging the piston.
