Oil leak

Post by oldncapilot » Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:53 pm

Oil is leaking from a gasket under the engine on my CB77. The gasket is under a cover which is held by 5 bolts and the drain plug screws into it. My question is, other than loosing the engine oil, is there any other problem I should be aware of in removing this cover? Also, can this gasket be ordered separately from an engine gasket set and if so, what is it called and where could I buy it? Thanks, Brian.

That's your oil pump. They can be a pain to take off, but you should have too much of an issue. I ended up making a new gasket for mine out off some cheap gasket material from autozone. No leaks yet.

There are two gaskets, on on top of the screen plate, and one on the bottom.

You need to use 1/32" gasket material because the gasket thickness determines the gear mesh for the oil pump. DO NOT USE THICKER MATERIAL. Original gasket was .020-.025 or a little over .5MM.

There are two hollow dowel pins in that align the plate. They are located where the long bolts are on opposite corners. This means the plate has to come down fairly straight. You cannot pry one end and keep pulling down on that one end. Tap with a plastic hammer to loosen the stuck gaskets and then carefully remove without ruining the gasket surface.

After I did mine, I thought about seeing if the local Honda dealer had the correct 0.020 inch thick gasket material. Still might try to find it at a foreign car supply house or the Honda dealer.

Rob

... and I do believe they are part of the standard motor gasket set.

Try not to bend the screen's metal flange when dissembling it.

The gaskets sets I've seen listed normally say that they do NOT include the oil pump gaskets.
