oil seal leak problem!!oil seal leak problem!!hi fellas! i've got a 68 305 dream. i've had it for 15 years. it runs absolutely great. starts on the first kick, or push of the starter button. BUT, it's ALWAYS had an oil leak on the kickstart lever side. i've replaced the crank seal, the trans shaft seal, and the starter sprocket seal a couple times each(i used brand new seals), but the bike still always leaks a substantial amount of oil when it sets. i'm at a loss here. is there something i'm missing? any helpful insite would be greatly appreciated. the bike is beautiful and i enjoy taking it to bike shows but i cringe when i see the oil start to drip!
There is a remote possibility that your leak is actually coming from the case housing adjacent to the seal and not the seal at all. Davomoto posted a thread some time ago about how he solved his leak from the same source. a thurough cleaning is in order and then a run with side cover off and a lot of bright light may reveal the path of the oil. Hope this helps ya,,,,,,,,,,,,,, RW
Hi. I have a similar leak on a ’61 CB77 at the starting sprocket under the rotor. If you remove. The rotor etc you'll see the crank bearing itself. The oil can flow unimpeded with those parts removed.
Now the starting sprocket rear flanged surface rides inside tge right sd crank seal and if not for the starting sprocket seal it would have an unimpeded flow to the rotor and stator area. I'm checking the starter sprocket seal for that reason and also checking without stator and rotor etc to see if I can view oils seeping anywhere. Good luck.
