Need to make sure I have the timing correct on 1971 CL350:
I have the left piston up and the mark at LT. I have the cam sprocket horizontal line parrellel with the top. OK. But the cam lobes on the left are not facing down, they are pointed to the side. Now, when I turn the engine counterclockwise one turn to where the LT mark comes up again, then the cam lobes are down but the line on the sprocket is hidden. Also, I have the points cam in so that during THIS stroke the L points just start opening at LF. My only question is they say to time the thing at left LT and the sprocket line horizontal, is it correct that the cam lobes are not DOWN at this point?????? Need to confirm as I do not want to put engine back in and have it wrong cause you have to take the engine out to do any of this. THANKS!
Cam Timing CL350
It's too long since I rebuilt a CB/CL350 but but let's try.
There are two TDC positions on a 4 stroke. At one, the valves are both closed and the motor is firing, so the points should have just opened. On the other rotation 360 degrees round, the valves are both slightly open at TDC. On the 350, that means that both cam lobes will point more or less back and front. On one rotation, the narrow angle will have them pointing slightly upwards (it will look flat) and on the other they will both point down about 90 degrees or so. 360 degrees on the crank is 180 degrees at the cam, so the marking on the cam sprocket will be hidden every second revolution. Is the cam sprocket on upside down by any chance?
Thanks. I marked the sprocket so I believe it is good. Your description of cam lobes is exactly how mine is working. I am thinking the book does not clarify where the cam lobes are when the L line is horizontal and mark is LT. My cam lobes are as you described, front and back. This would not be the compression stroke. At 360 degrees the cam lobes are down and the points are just opening on the LT mark. That seems right to me but I need confirmation. The book just doesn't clarify.
