Cold Cylinder

I've been riding my '66 CB77 for 7 months, 2500 miles and never had a major issue, until a few days ago...

I was accelerating, shifting through the gears and as I shifted into 4th (or shortly thereafter), I experienced a sudden loss of power. I downshifted into 3rd, only to find there was no power there either. Same in 2nd and 1st. I was able to hobble into work as I was only a mile away when this all happened.

I can start the bike and it will idle, but as soon as I put it into gear and attempt to take off, it lugs and dies. If I let it idle for a minute, I notice that one cylinder gets hot, but the other one does not. I've got spark and fuel/air. What now???

The first thing I would check is to pull the float bowl on the cold cylinder just for kicks and see if there is even gas there. Then I'd do a compression check. That could tell you the rest of the story. If you need help in any way, please feel free to PM me and I'll try to lend a hand. We don't live that far apart. RW

I had that happen last year. It was just a wire came loose to the coil. It shut off like someone flipped a switch. I plugged it back in, and everything was fine. If your getting spark on both sides, this may not be the problem, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check for loose electrical connections.

Well, I got lucky. It turns out that the adjustment screw on the intake valve had loosened considerably. Readjusted the valves and I'm back in business.
