Oil leak detection, right side of engine
Oil leak detection, right side of engineHi, I've been trying to figure out where an oil leak is coming from on the right side of my CL77 engine. I've replaced the clutch rod and seal along with the kick shaft seal. This helped, but there's still some oil leakage. After a ride, I noticed the chain is oil soaked. Does anyone know if I can safely add some sort of dye to the oil that will help pinpoint the source of oil leak?
Thanks, Ken do you have a chain oiler on the end of the sprocket shaft? the dreams came with them and they will by design let a very small amount of oil out on the chain. The are visable and adjustable. just a guess? or its a seal or case leak.

Oil leak detection, right side of engineThanks for your response. No, I don't see a chain oiler on the end of the sprocket shaft. There is a small hole in the case to the right of the sprocket shaft and up a bit. Not sure what its function is though. I found out that Kragen sells an oil dye which can be detected by a black light. I'll give it a try and post the results.

------------- Thanks Greg for the foot spray solution. It sounds like a very simple and clever solution. I will definitely try it next time I run into this problem. At this point I have already cleaned the oil leak area and added UV oil dye to the crankcase. Once the rain stops I will take my Scrambler out for a spin then check the results with my black light. That small hole is probably the drain hole from the area behind the barrels. rain water can get in there or if the carbs leak etc, the fluids should drain out of that hole.
It's possible that there's an oil leak at the rear of the barrels but a bad seal on one of the two transmissions shafts sounds more likely.
Oil leak detection, right side of engineI took my 305 for a run today. I pulled off the right engine case and checked the area with my black light to discover that the oil leak was coming from the sprocket shaft seal. Finally, the mystery has been solved and can now be fixed.
I want to thank everyone for their helpful input on the oil leak problem. Ken
