compression

Post by cac » Fri Sep 25, 2009 7:28 pm

Howdy, just checked my compression on my CB77 left side is 150 and the right is 105 I am going to take the motor out just wondering if this is a possible broken ring. The motor would not turn over when I first got the bike it sat since 1974. THANKS Chris
I'm hooked on the resto project!!!!

Try squirting a little oil down the hole, if compression comes up it's a ring. Test compression with throttle wide open and nothing blocking the intake tract. D

Your problem is usually caused by stuck ring/rings as you say the engine was stuck at one time. .........lm

stuck rings

Before you pull the engine, I'd try an old outboard motor remedy. Go to a good marine supply store and buy a can of outboard motor tuner. Spray enough in the hole to cover the pistons, then rotate the crank enough times to give the rings a good soaking. Keep it up for a couple days, then fire it up and check the compression. This has worked several times for me in the past and could save you an engine pull. Hope it helps, RW
