New, for me, Honda Dream!
New, for me, Honda Dream!Hello! 1st message on the board! I want to thank everyone for their knowledge, experience, pictures, and opinions. You guys helped make up my mind about what kind of motorcycle to buy!
I am a very pleased and look forward to sharing my experiences with you. Want to start out by IDing: Frame # CA78-310### Engine # CA77E-909 From what I've gathered form the forum, It's a 1963 Honda CA77 Dream 305cc. Pink slip says 1965, but I believe that was the year sold. 16K miles. I've got to get some newer pics. but I'll share what I have...my first sight of her! I've taken off the windshield and saddlebags. Headlight is out. I'm trying to get at the combination switch to have a set of keys made. How do you get at the lock cylinder? Also, the connections can be pulled apart, right? They're a bit stuck, and I don't want to damage the wiring. Any security suggestions? I'm thinking Lo-jack. Battery, petcock/carb. fresh-up, ignition check up, new plugs, oil change...then blast off! I know there's some other steps in there, or that will come up, but I think that covers it. Bike was prepped for winter and parked for over 25 years. I'm hoping my Dream wants to get on the road as bad as I want to get it on the road! Blinkers...gotta do some more research. Thinking LED, and possibly integrated with rear view mirrors for the front, and something on the rear fender. I want to keep it clean, simple, and practical. Really want to avoid hacking, drilling, etc. I'm going to keep this bike for a long time and I will ride at every opportunity! Thanks, again, to everyone @ Honda305! I'm open to any and all input! Looks like a 1963 from the frame number. Engine number appears to be off....does it start with a 3 or a 9?
To get to the key switch, you need to go through the headlight. Remove the chrome bezel with the screw on the bottom and the light should just pop out. You can get to the connections and the hold down through there. Nice Buco bags. I see you need the rear lights for them. I've seen similar repro's offered that would work well. If you wanted, you could introduce one of the two lights on the bag as turn signals and the other as brake lights. Pretty easy to do. Get that $20 petcock that you will see noted on this site. It works well, but just be careful taking it apart. Take a number of pictures so it will easier on the re-assembly. Nice looking bike. Steve CA78 - 3111XX - Frame

Thanks for the replies!
Took a couple more pictures to demonstrate engine# CA77E-909 (is this '63 model engine?) and main switch # NB693 Got the lock cylinder out and planning to go to one of the oldest key shops in town (doing business since the 60's), I'm being hopeful that they'll have some blanks. I did find some blanks on e-bay...if I can't have them made by Monday, I'll e-bay a set. The bags are in pretty good condition. Don't have a key for them, either. I thought about setting up winkers in them, too, if I decide to keep them. It's nice to have options! This guy can make you a key from the lock # . Looks like a replacement upper case.

Thanks for the info...going to write up an email, see what happens. Got a little anxious with the main switch and got it removed, already. No worries, as long as I have some keys! Going to have to replace the little gasket between the light housing and retainer. Looks like it's made of paper. You think the upper case was replaced? Explains the discrepancy on the #'s. From what I've gathered, it's entirely pre-1965. What year is CA77E-909 from? Honda used a 6 digit number, and then 7 digits in 65. If you replaced your upper engine case with a new one from Honda, it would not have #s stamped in to it. The CA77E looks like a Honda stamping, while the 909 deos not. What does the title say?
