Swap meet find- 67 Scrambler restore

Post by OldStan » Tue Jul 02, 2013 2:25 pm

Went to AMCA Swap Meet and Show. Entered my dream in the show, brought home this 67 CL77 from the swap meet.

I think it's complete and right, except for a couple of things I'll mention, but I'll defer to the experts.

issues;

1. main one- engine is frozen ( kept the price down, although I may have paid too much anyway.)

2. Seat cover not original? Seller claimed it was, but I don't think so.

3. Extra hole in the headlight body. If I'm correct, the blue light goes in the empty hole. There shouldn't be anything where the light is now, right?

4. Paint on the tank looks someone added some stripes over the original paint, kind of a milky clearcoat remains. I may try to clean it off to the original surface, unless, of course I'm mistaken about was should be there.

5. The valley cover, chain guard and both kick stands are chromed, not sure if that was original or not.

6. Needs tires- not a real problem, just a little more cost.

7. Brake lever poked a hole in the right side cover- have a better (but not great) spare for it.

Pluses;

1. I have a title!

2. And the original license plate-should be able to use it because I have the title.

3. Came with the tool kit.

Now all I have to do is find time to work on it. Hopefully it won't take as long as my Dream did (2 years) to get together. It shouldn't.
4. Most of the chrome only has minor surface rust (if any) that will clean up.

Stan, nice find. Looks like you have one of the late candy scramblers. I have a blue one and an orange one. What are your frame and engine numbers? As far as your questions:
1. Seat cover NOT original. Not the proper cover and if a late scrambler it would have the silver tinsel welt around the top.
2. You are right about the neutral light.
3. Valley cover should be painted silver
Chain guard and center stand should be painted black.
Side stand is zinc plated.

It also looks like someone replaced the foot shift lever and it does have comfy aftermarket grips.

Have fun- HT

Frame is CL77 10656xx
Engine is 10659xx

I imagine that exact seat cover would be impossible to find?

What's the difference in the shift lever? Does it have flat metal where the rubber is on this one? I'll be looking for another one anyway since that one is bent.

I wonder if the extra chrome was a dealer add-on or buyer upgrade? Guess I'm lucky to have those parts in any case.

Any clues about the paint? The thought crossed my mind that someone was trying to mimic a later model paint scheme, is that possible?

Stan, This is what yours would have looked like several years ago. I got this bike from the original owners family about 8 years ago.

Gosh, that's pretty! I keep being reminded how much I like the looks of the Scrambler. Fact is, I really LOVE the looks of the Superhawk and the Scrambler (and the original CBX, too). IMHO, they are some of the most beautiful Japanese motorcycles ever made.

Stan, frozen or not, I think you made a great find!! I can't wait to see what you do with it.
