Hi all. My dad had a 1964 Superhawk in high school. He quit riding it when he went to college, but my grandparents kept it under their tractor shed. My dad is planning on retiring in two years (high school teacher, 32+ years), and I thought about restoring his motorcycle for him has a retirement gift. My dad has always talked about getting it to run again. My grandpa (small engine repairman, flight engineer on B-29s) has agreed to help me in this endeavor. I hope to add some pics and keep a log of our journey on this forum. Any words of encouragement or advice would be welcomed. I do have one question though: What's the best way to start?

My goal is to having it running. I'm not gonna be worried about the cosmetics until that happens. Again thanks for any help.

Tommy, welcome to the forum! The best place to start is with a good repair manual. Bill Silvers books, available through this site, are the best! First thing, does the engine turn over? Many times the piston rings will rust to the bore from sitting. Engine turns over, then start with oil change, fresh battery, carb rebuild, fresh fuel, is fuel flowing freely from petcock? Is there power to the coils? Does it get spark? etc etc etc . Good luck, and post some pics when you can.

Is he a WWII vet or a bit later?
