Just to conclude my little diversion into my upcoming CL72 project, I was wondering why the top end appeared to be in remarkably good condition. When I was taking out the cam shaft, I noticed that the points cam was moving around a little. It seems that the guy who built up the head had used parts from a CB72/77 and then had to cut off the tacho drive.

Image

This wasn't too much of a problem despite the rough job of cutting off the excess. The big problem was using a later points shaft - the one with both bearing lands the same size. This cam needed the early one with the bigger bearing at the cam end. As a result the points cam was floating around and I doubt the engine ever ran despite the good intentions.

Image

I was hoping the cam might be something special but it is just a standard CB cam profile. The valves are fitted with lightweight keepers on the springs and the springs have obviously had little use.

Image

The head also has a set of late model rockers, 3 of which look perfect. The fourth is not so good but still looks serviceable.

Back to the job of paint and/or wheelbuilding tomorrow, depending on the weather.

LM put me straight on the early / late points cams for these bikes but the info (which came from Bill Silver) is different from my experience with early Honda Dreams.

I have early Dreams with the stepped shaft but also a late 'shallow spline' CL77 cam with stepped shaft. I also have the points cam with both bearings the same size which I thought were late.......

I thought the change was to make the part cheaper to make but there must be some other reason lurking.....

I put off the wheel building for far too long. I found that I had enough genuine NOS spokes to do both the font and rear wheels. I wanted to use genuine Honda spokes as I couldn't get double-butted replacements.

Image

The front turned out pretty nicely once I'd got the spoke pattern worked out from marks on the hub and photographs I had of original wheels. Each spoke got tightened evenly and then just nipped up. I shall true them later when I have built a suitable jig.

Image

The double-butted front spokes just look so 'right'....

Image

Once I had the rythm it was pretty straightforward to build up the rear wheel to match. Just single butted fro the rear spokes but still satisfying to have both wheels laced with original Honda spokes.

Did you get the rear wheel spokes to be the same length at the nipples G? .............lm
