Try putting a washer or two inside the shifter rod on the shaft. Is the shaft loose or does the shifter move around on the shaft ? May just need to bush the shaft.

Rode a CBR250R today. Cute little bike! Just a little torquier than the Old Girl, but the Old Girl has a lot more up top. The CBR is smooth, though! I also rode a Ninja 300. Now, that bike is fast! Much faster than the CBR and the Old Girl. It's very refined, too. Nice motorcycle! Well, both are. No, all three are!

Thank you for that! The shifter splines are worn. The shaft is just fine, it's splines are good and it does not move. I've considered bushing it, but I just don't know about that.

Ed, thank you! I need to give you a call...perhaps tomorrow? Busy day for me today (yikes)!

Buy a reamer of the size you need and take the hole out to the 'next size' by drilling 0.2mm undersize then reaming. Next job is to find some material to make the pins.

Alternatively you might be able to make a Honda 400/4 linkage work with a long rod.

Or - take a look at 'rose' bearings on eBay. This is what the 400/4 used and they provide a much larger spherical bearing surface.

The above should work with your existing shift linkage rod. Just get some bolts, bolt the rod-ends to your shifter arm and shift lever and you will be good to go.....

You might try and get some rubber 'boots' to cover the rod ends to keep everything nice.

Graham - thank you!! I have basic tools, no machine tools at all (well, a bench grinder). However, you've given me some ideas.

Oh - I've been perusing the ads, and eBay, for a 400 four. Maybe!!

You'll love a 400/4. It's a nice compact bike. I did 14,000 miles in the first year with mine. My friend Les has just bought an MZ Skorpion and got a second one as spares. He has very kindly gifted the spare one to me. It's a nice bike with a British designed frame and a big Yamaha 660cc water-cooled 5-valve engine. Another project...... :-)

That Skorpion is cooool! The motor looks like a water cooled SR500, or it resembles one.

I had my heart set on a new SR400, and they're finally showing up here. But, they're just too much money.

I ran across a Buell Blast the other day. I'd never seen one before. Ummmm. I didn't know what to think, other than, "you've got to be kidding me".

I'm looking at a 1988 Hawk NT650. It's intriguing, and the price is right. Nice V-twin, carbureted, water cooled, herky frame, single side swingarm, naked bike, no fairing, and not a big machine. It would fit me, I think.

But, yes...a 440/4. I have to be patient, there aren't many out there.

My garage smells like old school motorcycle. I just got off the bike after a short ride. I smell like old school motorcycle, now, too....
