Inching ahead

Post by Loudo » Mon Feb 23, 2009 4:37 pm

I've been out of commission as my computer is infected with a nasty virus and apparently I need to take it to a PC shaman to exorcise its demons.

We had a beautiful sunny day here in Puget Sound Saturday so I got the bike out. My intent was to see if my new oil seal around the points cam shaft was doing its job and to use my timing light to see if the timing advance was working properly.

Started right up but something wasn't right. I noted a strong exhaust pulse from the left side muffler but weakness on the right...air but not exhaust was my guess. Uh oh. I shut it off, removed and cleaned the R side spark plug, then whipped out my Vise-Grips and test light and checked the timing. Everything was fine, I cleaned the points also. Fired it up again and same thing though after a couple moments it started coughing and harrumphing and this was the right side cylinder coming to life. Warmed up fine after that. Not sure what that was all about. I've taken to not messing with the throttle during warmup. If it's idling good I just try to keep the revs steady and slowly open the choke a little at a time for a couple minutes.

Checked the advance timing with my timing light, revving it up to 3k. Timing was between the advance marks, so I'm thinking everything's good there. Did a little more extended riding, shifting from 1st to 2nd and back was fine. Can't go faster yet cuz there's not enough room! No repeat of the spontaneous revving which was good. I note that my shift shaft oil seal is more of a leak than before so I will replace that again when my new left side crankcase cover gasket arrives and I can do a whole thing on the left side. oil filter and whatnot. New points cam shaft oil seal isn't leaking.

Gauges seem to be working fine also. Trying to find some mirrors that are non-shite repros. Terry at Western Hills Honda said he has some aftermarket ones that are good only for show as they show you the sky instead of what's arriving over your shoulder. Anyone have a lead on good CB77 mirrors?

Anyone have a lead on good CB77 mirrors?
They're on eBay (OEM) and have a slightly convex glass, which is useful as the flat-glass type are about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe! The proper CB type are NLA, so you need to clamp the upper bend in a vice between 2 wooden or fibre jaw-guards; remove the perch locknut, slip a short length of plastic water pipe over the thread and up to the lower bend. Then, using a 17mm ring spanner (wrench, to you guys) over said plastic pipe, torsionally twist the mirror support arm, between the lower & upper bends, by about 20º. Et voila! A mirror that suits a CB perfectly.

BTW, how on Earth did your PC contract a virus in this day & age? Top 3 AV protection apps are Kaspersky, BitDefender and NOD32. I use the latter. They're all lightweight, small-footprint apps (unlike the processor- & memory-hungry Norton, McAfee, F-Secure and even AVG 8). And all under 40 Bucks!

Left side adventures

Post by Loudo » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:57 pm

Removed the left side crankcase cover to take apart the clutch in an attempt to figure out if there was something obvious causing the clutch to drag slightly. Also wanted to get a good look at the oil filter as it seemed impossible to me to remove it and clean it and get the drive chain back on it without removing the case cover. I bought a gasket from an eBay retailer and note that the gasket doesn't follow the outline of the cover, it just gets wider where it needs to clear the bolt locations. Since this extra gasket material in contained inside the engine case, is there a concern that it disturbs the proper flow of oil at the bottom of the engine? Should I lay my old gasket on the new and trim it to the size of the original? I assume the new gasket was made this way because it's cheaper. I'm interested in the opinion of y'all whether I should be concerned about this or just throw it on and not worry about it.

Fellas?

Post by Loudo » Wed Mar 04, 2009 5:39 pm

Does anyone have an opinion about the question I posed concerning the crankcase cover gasket? I mean other than saying I should have bought a real Honda part, should I trim the damn thing or just install it?

Other pics of the progress here.

I couldn't see anything amiss in the clutch, and the problem is dragging, not slipping, so I'm going to put it all back together and see if there's improvement.

Here's the oil filter as removed from the bike. Doesn't look too gunky. I mean, I think. I don't have any perspective on this other than other folks who have described this thing being really gunked up when they pulled it.

Looking for a reason the clutch drags. Nothing obvious here. Took it all apart, there's nothing obviously sticking.

Thoroughly cleaned all the clutch plates, here's one to look at. Checked for flatness on a sheet of glass, they're all flat. Does this plate look OK or worn or what?

I'd just run it the way it is.

You show a 6 disc old style clutch.
The center hub should have 3 wires and it wasn't the best HONDA issued.
I can/will supply ya a machined 1966/1967 Cush Clutch which is the best ya can put in the engine.
PM me and I'll tell ya about it. ..............lm
