I was waiting for someone to mention the piston aluminum in that barrel.
A trick used to remove it from a 2 stroke barrel is to use pool acid and rinse quickly.
It removes the aluminum and when rinsed quickly doesn't harm the barrel.
Use rubber gloves for sure. . .............lm

Hi,

Well, I'm sorry to let you wait so long.
The reason why suggest a re bore isn't the aluminium in the barrel, but the complete absence of the hone structure in the cylinder ( and meanwhile remove the aluminium in the barrel).
As you know the hone structure keeps the oil between the piston and barrel, and when there isn't any hone structure, the piston will seize, eventually helped by moisture or fuel in the oil .

Considering the mileage this was meant to happen,

Jensey and Ed. Here are some photos of the seized piston. I took one of the "good" piston, as well. I'll be on the way to a machine shop shortly, with the barrel and the pistons (in case they want to see them). I was hoping to get away with just a hone, but if not - then that's the way it is. It HAS to be right!

Also, I don't expect to see grooves with a seizure. I did expect to see some damage to the liner because of the broken rings. More to my point, "caused" by a broken ring (a gouge, for instance). I've seen seized two stroke barrels, and they look pretty much like this one. Transfer of metal and money to be spent. Joy.

Ed, thanks for the tip on the acid. I had heard that battery acid could be used, too. I'm going to let the machinist do his magic, and then ask him "how did you do that"? ;~)

Easy-Off oven cleaner will also remove the aluminum from the cylinder. Just don't get it on any aluminum that you want to preserve. Regards, Chase

Chase, thanks! That's a great tip.

I just returned from the machinist. He's going to measure the bores, look at them closely, and tell me what I need to do. I left him the old pistons, he wanted to look at them, too. He's also going to clean the barrel for me, and upon asking - yes, he can "do" the head, too. The valves, cut the seats, etc. Wooo-hooo!!

I took a picture of the combustion chamber of the cylinder that had the seizure. I'm not at all well versed, but I had said (and so did Ed) that it was running hot. Here's another shot. There may be more clues here.

This pic and the top of the piston told me it ran HOT.
