1961 CB72 ProjectYesterday I managed to get that rivet link sorted out to my satisfaction and this morning spent a pleasant hour or so with Alan W, who had kindly thought of me when he picked up a stash of CB72 parts.
Amongst 'my' haul were some tasty early parts which will help me get this project finished off and will help out with my '62 CB72 that I am collecting parts for. Here are two early speedometers in need of my attention. These are retained in the headlamp shell with a spring which hooks on a tab at the back of the case. Strangely - the '62 bikes kept the 'hoop' mounting on the top triple clamp and had this oddball cushion before Honda deleted the hoop and just held the speedo in the headlamp with a diferent cushion to the end of productio. I never expected to find one of these. Luckily Alan knew what he was looking at... Luckily there was another one of the early speedo drives in the box as well as a second incomplete one. These continued into '62. I now have three sets of crankcases to choose from for my '62 project and my CYB bike. One of the sets is an 8-hole barrel type without the tower breather and the other is the type with the later barrel with the extra oil gallery. Honda sure were busy in those early years. A good day at the 'office' methinks.. Thanks again, Alan. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

It was one of those occasions where it slipped down in what seemed to be sloa motion but I just couldn't spare any hands to catch it. I also forgot to pack the area with rags so the error was a compound one.
That link just disappeared. It wasn't stuck to anything I could see and it certainaly hadn't dropped right through. I was determined not to take th emotor apart but didn't want to leave it in there. No amout of poking about, turning th emotor upside-down and whatever just wouldn't entice that little link to drop out. I had areally old endoscope but it was just too big to get inside the little Honda engine. i n the end I resorted to eBay and there was someone selling 5mm diameter endoscopes for just £15 and they plug straight into the USB port of a computer. It arrived this morning and I went straight out to the workshop. Within 5 minutes, I had tracked that sideplate down to an oily ledge near the bottom of the cam tunnel. I bent up a piece of welding rod and just like a surgeon in an operating theatre (in my head) I was able to hook that little chap and whip it out of the engine. No more sleepless nights. I can get on with the rest of the engine work now. The device is really good fun and allows you to peer inside the engines nooks and crannies without dismantling. This is the one I bought..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331386037452? ... EBIDX%3AIT G

Nice pickup Graham. I ordered one today from Singapore. In the "good" old days it would have been handy for inspecting combustion chambers through the plug hole. I don't do that sort of work any more though. Handy around the house too, for inspecting wall cavities.
I received your pm. Al will fix you up. Thanks mate. Brian.
