The bronze guides turned up just before I had to go away again. They look pretty nice and come with a set of viton seals (not in the picture). I transferred the clips from the old guides and started work on a tool to pull them in without damaging them.

Just managed a couple of little clean-up jobs on the rocker shaft bores. There are two different bores 10mm and 10.5mm with correspondingly different rocker shafts. I have a 10mm reamer but the 10.5 required the use of an adjustable version.

Image

This is not really removing metal from the bores, just making sure that they are free from burrs.

Another week away before I can get back to this but I am looking forward to some quality workshop time.

Hi,

The valve guides look very good. They do not have the groove and air hole in them. Does that matter at all?

I guess the viton seal sits in the groove at the end.

Look forward to the next instalment when you install them in the head.

Hi Gordon

No these don't have the hole and the groove. Honda deleted that on later engnes.

Going to make a high-tensile draw bar to pull them in rather than drifting them in.

Still no physical progress as I am out of the country. I did pick up these parts from my friend's house yesterday.

This is the left hand badge that I swapped with Tim. It's in pretty nice shape and will go nicely with the remaining right-hand badge I have.

Image

I also got a couple of sets of Tim's reproduced early grips. Luckily he beat me to a NOS pair on eBay last year and with his amazing skills and specially-made tooling he has been able to reproduce them.

Image

Last up is a NOS air tube arrangement that joins the little barbs at the cylinder-head to the air filter.

Image

With this and a set of clear tubes from the carb overflows I'll be able to make the bike look just as it did back in the day.

Early grips

Post by Tim Miller » Mon Jul 13, 2015 3:19 pm

Graham,

Thanks for the compliment. Having the correct early grips really makes a difference to me.
I still a few extra sets if anyone wants some. Just PM me.

Regards,
Tim

Still no real project progress as I have been busy sorting out our new garden and setting up a rainwater collection system.

I did find these on eBay and there didn't seem to be much interest in them so I got them very cheaply - for Honda tools anyway.

Image

One box is marked Honda 50 Special Tools and the other just Special Tools. There is quite a jumble of well-used tools but there are some parts which go with other sets I have bought so I will have to go through my whole collection and see what belongs where.

Image

I think that I have all the parts for a genuine Honda shock compressor and multiple sets of valve re-facing tools for the smaller engines. Once I have a complete set of tools for the bikes I am working on I will release some of this stuff 'back into the wild'.

It's interesting to see how Honda designed their special tools and how they were were meant to work.

I'll try and get some real progress made soon......

Great find! I must be using the wrong search terms on eBay because I never saw them.
