Bagging and label's are a necessity to me. I keep thinking, if I were to croak, what would my wife do with all this stuff? Would she have even a clue as to what it was? With bags and labels, she can at least get the stuff back into circulation :)

Day 5 - The cam chain is on a break...

Post by bbap » Wed Dec 29, 2010 11:48 am

Although it is not really "Day 5" (I do little things on the project every day), this is my 5th post on this project.

With some advice from LM, I was able to break the chain. I plan on replacing the chain and I saw a source on this forum only about 15 miles from me, so that's the plan.

With some light tapping with hammer and oak, the heads easily came off. A little anti-climatic I'd say...The reason I had to break the chain is because the M-Link was not in sight either through the tensioner or on the top side. I removed the oil pump and found it right on the bottom. being on the bottom it was not accessible to be removed. I cut through with the dremel and the chain parted company. I had been soaking the pistons and bore with PB Blaster now for about 2 weeks. All was wet as I expected. Both pistons are within about .25" from the top which allows for a nice "Pond" of PB Blaster. I gave it a few taps but no movement. I'll let it sit another week or so and maybe try the 50/50 Acetone+ATF before I use a little more force. I don't see any significant rusting but not much is visible either. The pics make it look pretty rusty but it's mostly just some light surface rust....I've seen some nice DIY presses that I can make to help put some pressure on the piston to force it down. I'll work on that in the interim and maybe clean up the clutch plates. Should keep me busy instead of watching TV for a while.... :)

Q: I was surprised to see both pistons near the top. I expected that the pistons would be either be both in the center of the stroke or that one would be up and the other down. Could someone educate me on that? I know this is a very Newbee question, but I'm used to single bangers....

The CAs have a 360 degree motor, which means that the pistons rise and fall together.

Good to know, thanks.

Any issue that you can see if I set up a press in which I put, roughly, equal pressure on both pistons to go down in an effort to unstick them?

Day 5.5 - Stuck no More

Post by bbap » Wed Dec 29, 2010 2:18 pm

How could I wait another week...I was just fooling myself. I rigged up a Piston Press based on some info within this forum and others and started putting some tension on #1 Piston. I was gonna start working on the 2nd press to put even pressure on #2 Piston, but I could feel the "give".

I've not removed the cylinder yet to inspect the bore but from what I can see, it should clean up just fine. I'll remove it possibly tonight and do a thorough inspection of the rings, bore, small end bearing and the piston and report back.

For those that are interested, here's the "tool" I made below. It is made up of:
1. Old broken treadmill I had tradded for, for a spot on our Softball team (Thanks Michael!)
2. One S&K ratchet extension
3. A couple of large impact sockets
4. Accorn head nuts
I used all four studs for insurance, but frankly it would have come off with just two. I just kept shimming it up until it moved easily.

I can turn it by hand now but it is tight at the top. I may just do a quick hone job on it as well.
