Thanks lee, that's pretty much what I'd worked out from looking at the diagram but it is good to have it confirmed. I hope to have it working today, and it looks like I have to repair my headlamp holder as apparently they are very hard to find, just needs soldering I think.
I have a UK source for rear brake cables which is also cheaper than ebay, but he's out of stock for 2-3 weeks, no rush though.
Fixed it - well sort of - I've worked out where the sidelights were wired wrong but I don't have the necessary electrical connector (tomorrow). The remaining issue is the green earth from the headlight - this then goes up to the speedo with a screw connection and then there's a green bullet (with a white plastic collar) connector which I've got no connections for. My headlamp is earthing through the frame and it all works fine without this plugged in to anything so I might just tape it up.
LOOKS LIKE I HAD MY SOURCE REVERSED. ..............lm
I THINK THAT IS A POWER SOURCE. YA CAN CHECK YOUR DIAGRAM AS IT DOESN'T SHOW A GREEN/WHITE COLLAR WIRE IT DOES SHOW (GREEN). ..............lm

Yeh it is green, but it has a white plastic collar over the end of the wire (similar to some of the blacks I have in the headlamp shell). I really hope it's not a power source as it's fastened to the speedo shell and soldered to the outer steel part of the headlamp holder, shown on the wiring diagram I have near the headlight as a short green earth.
I'll maybe post a pic tomorrow.
green/whitegreen w/white trace in headlight bucket is a ground (earth) wire...tricky, the white trace is just the collar at connections...green/white bullet from headlamp should connect to green/white female connector on ground wire to speedo.

Wow that's tidy :-)
OK, I actually checked the back of my speedo and you are right there's a female green wire with a white plastic collar on it - but now I don't know where the screw connector goes - I had assumed (and half remembered) it came off the back of the speedo. Here's a pic: http://www.toastyhamster.plus.com/IMG_2788.jpg Very tidy wiring btw. and a pic very handy for me thanks, I wasn't sure where some of the wiring routed into the headlight. I still need a grommet for the "back" hole.
