Here are the gear engagement photos. Note the 2nd gear dogs engagement and the 3rd gear jamb. I believe I'll need the offset cotters to increase the 2nd gear dog engagement, but do I go with the 0.5 mm or the 1.0 mm cotters and do I need 2 or all 4?

Call me about this.
The area where the PAWL engages always has flat edges. .................lm

Determined to make progress, last evening, I cracked the cases and took a look at what I have. Pics below of what I found.

I see no obvious damage to the gear teeth - no missing teeth, no cracks, no rounding, no bits of metal. There is a lot of slop and the dog engagement is slender. I'm thinking I will need the offset cotters. I'll post photos of each gear engagement soon. There sometimes seems to be a jam in 3rd and/or 4th when the dogs don't engage, but rather butt against each other. I'm not sure what that's all about.

The teeth inside the first gear on the counter shaft are badly damaged. I doubt it would have been possible for the previous owners to kick start the engine as I can only get engagement on a few spots. Also, the pawl spring is there, but does not really push the pawl forward. Looks as if I'll be ordering a new low gear, but I cannot find a NOS pawl yet.

Thanks, LM. I will call.

I took the countershaft out and removed the 1st gear. Below are some photos. Chewed up a bit? The starter spindle isn't looking great either.

Thanks, LM, I will call. I'm also looking for the crankcase bolts - not a single one was with the engine - and I'm not sure all of the knock pins are there. I only see 2, one fore and one aft.

Nice talking to you today LM, as always. Below are the photos of Bushing C, the "top hat" spindle end bushing and the pawl end of the starter spindle. I hope the images are clear enough. There was quite a bit of copper showing at the pawl end of the starter spindle and bushing C looks quite worn. I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion.
