Looking good! Two things I'd like to point out. First, the rear brake adjuster nut looks to be screwed almost all the way down. Either the shoes are really worn out, or the brake arm on the hub is not aligned correctly. Did you match the alignment dots on cam and arm? Second, the rectifier looks like the old silicon type, and you will want to upgrade to a more modern setup. Retrobikes has a replacement that looks exactly like the origional, but uses modern technology, or you can build a replacement yourself really cheap. Keep up the good work, and keep those awsome pics coming!

Hey Davomoto - thanks for the comments. I'll check out both - especially the rear brake arm. I just ran the nut up against the spring until I can get the rear brake pedal on the bike. however, I did not remember to align the center punch marks with each other - thanks for the heads up.

I tested the output of the stator and got about 13.25 volts at around what I would guess is around 3-4000 rpm since the Dreams do not have a tach. I figured that that was probably fine. Is there an actual problem with the original rectifiers or is it a reliability issue?

I'm trying to keep the cost to a minimum on this build since it will hopefully belong to someone else this spring. I have the radio shack rectifier on my CB77 so if I need to I'll probably do the same on the CA77

Keep the heads up coming - The more knowledge I can get on these old bikes the better...

The rectifiers seem to break down over time. If yours is putting out decent voltage, you may just want to stick with it.

Thanks for the clarification. When they go bad, do they typically allow more voltage than normal like most other rectifiers?

BTW How's that Superhawk rebuild coming along?

I have found that they don't charge as well, although I have seem them overcharge a battery to the point that it explodes! Superhawk is done, Cl77 95% done, motor for the next CL77 almost done, and then 3 more CLs waiting in line. I have a 65 small hub to do after the 66 and 67 are sold, and then a CL72, and a CL77 flat tracker/ street tracker. If only I didn't have a job, and did have a ton of money, and a 20,000 square foot shop!

I see the CL bug has sank its teeth in pretty deep! Sounds like your pretty busy my friend - but in a good way. Are you going to keep any of the CL's 20,000 sq feet shop? I wish I could just talk my wife out of needing to park her car in the garage - Isn't that what the driveway is for? :)

Yes, that's what the driveway is for, especially here in CA, where it really doesn't get that cold. I'm going to keep the 65 CL77, small hub, and a 63 CL72, or at least that's the plan! I sold an SL70 today, so I'll have some seed money to finsh and start more projects. I also bought a CB77 and two CL72 parts bikes today. That seems to be the norm here, sell one, buy three!
