WTB CB77 Crankshaft Assembly

Post by johnzmg » Sat Dec 22, 2007 11:42 am

Help me out with my Superhawk restoration. I need a nice CB77 crankshaft assembly. It needs to have the rods with good bearings, main roller bearings and the outer races for the main bearings.

Thanks!
John

The CB crank has a hole near the drift key slot which oils the starter sprocket. The CL crank doesn't have a hole there and it is necessary for the CB engine. ......................lm

I'm bumping this old post I found to ask if a CB77 crank be used in a CL77 engine?
I see that the middle product part number for the CB is 275 and for the CL is 278.
Is the CB starter oil hole lm mentions the only difference and would it cause a problem (leak?) in a CL engine build?

Yes you need to stop the flow of oil from that hole.......

Hello,

I used the 360 degree Dream Cranks with the oil hole in my two CL Twingle engines. I took the stem out of an aluminum pop rivet, chucked it in a drill motor and filed the diameter to a press fit in the hole. Start the rivet stem in the hole by tapping with a hammer. When you have it started good, cut it off with a set of side cutters about an 3/8 to 1/4 inch long. Then drive it all the way down. Cutting it off is only to keep from bending when your driving it in. When you've got it driven down just take a flat file and file it flush with the shaft. I've done 2 this way and never had a bit of trouble or a leak. Plus it can be converted back for a starter drive by just drilling the aluminum out with a hand drill.

Thanks guys,

Plugging the oil hole with an aluminum rivet is a great idea Mark.
I think I'll hold out for a CL crank unless I can get a deal on a CB crank in which case I'll use your idea.

BTW, I checked my crank using the hammer tap technique.
I still don't know if the "tink" noise the left side rod makes indicates a good or bad big end bearing but the right side makes a distinctly different "toink" noise so I'm going to change it out.

How's your twingle working out for you Mark?
Are you riding it on that flattrack you mentioned?
