It's interesting that this diagram labels the rectifier as Cilicon Rectifier (silicon misspelled of course) rather than selenium rectifier. If this is in fact the case then a CL rectifier should be the replacement of choice silicon has less resistance and does not go off with age so much.

I think you are correct. From memory the CL72 Shop Manual states that the CL has a silicon rectifier too and goes on to highlight the improvements over the 'old' selenium device.

Strange though that Honda equipped the CL models with a supposed superior silicon rectifier from 1962 but carried on fitting the inferior selenium devices on the CB models for another five years; or did they just upgrade those too and not bother to tell anyone?

Anyone know?

my 1967 model had the selenium rectifier. had to upgrade it when I restored the bike.
