I was taking apart my ignition switch to clean it and the parts kind of, uh, scattered when I pulled the black plastic piece out of the housing. I wrangled all of the parts up and put the springs, plastic H's, and triangular copper contacts back in. I replaced them so the one side of each triangle was pointing towards the center. I hooked everything back up and the headlights would only come on between key positions. I now have it apart again and will try to realign it with two corners of each contact piece towards the center and see if I have any luck with that.
My question is:
Has anybody noticed how these parts are aligned? Are the contacts arranged uniformly or not? Does anybody have a picture of what the correctly positioned guts look like?
I will up date this post if I am successful with my next attempt.
Ignition Switch Guts
I just had to take apart my Ignition a couple hours ago. Seems somewhere in the past 20 or so years the P.O. managed to get one of the pins to jam and break the barrel movement...anyway I do believe that all 3 triangles should be "pointing" towards the middle.
Seeing as this is just from memory, I am now interested in the correct positioning of the triangular contacts myself; for fear that I did not put them back correctly I did fix the lock problem but am still working out some (electrical) bugs on my '65. If anyone knows offhand or has a virgin ignition they would like to take apart I would be very much appreciative of this info! will
Correct PositioningSorry I haven't replied to this thread. I did get the switch back together after a fem tries. If I can remember correctly, one of the triangular pieces was reversed in relation to the other two. I looked at the connections on the back of the switch (which are labeled quite nicely) and arranged the triangular pieces so that the starter was getting juice from the battery in all of the correct positions.
I had it together incorrectly a couple of times and strange things would happen, like the lights would only come on in between positions. Once I made the logical connection, it took only a few minutes to line everything up correctly. I took many pictures that night, but I don't think I took any of the correct arrangement. Sorry. This worked great and I have been on the road with the dream all summer after using LM's tuning recipe. I rechecked the procedure and adjusted the chain every 15 miles for the first hundred miles and nothing has moved since the first couple of adjustments. Living (a) Dream!
Well tonight I am going to rip that sucker apart again and try fiddling with the contact positioning. If I can get it to work correctly I will try to reiterate what I did for future reference. There's only what, like 17 more possible ways to put the contacts all back together? This should be a fun night...
